Vintage Dresdens {Finished}

Over Christmas break I was able to finish up my dresden quilt.  

It was made with the help of the lovely ladies in my Bee Vintage VQB group and it only took me from September 'til now for it to get finished.  It's a miracle! :)

 Isn't it so pretty? I made it a twin size, so it will reside on my daughter's bed after her big sister moves out of their shared room.  Oh, happy day!  I have visions of a girly, vintage-y, pink and white cottage-y room for her.  In my head it's going to be fabulous...

I chose to add grey sashing as opposed to white because I wanted to give it a bit of a modern flair.  While I'm fully aware this is not a "modern" quilt, I felt like the grey updated the sheets a bit while still retaining the vintage charm.  Thus, modern.  In my eyes it worked out perfect. 

Once again, our quilter worked her magic and quilted the heck out of this one. 
I love what she chose to do.

The binding came from my LQS.  I bought it as a stash piece not realizing it worked with the quilt until it sat on my cutting table for a few days.  Then...light-bulb! (name that movie)

The back is a vintage sheet I thrifted awhile ago.
I think it has a Monet look to it, don't you?!
For some reason I think I might have had this sheet as a kid.  Mom, Renae??

A Dresden Collage

  August was my month for my Bee Vintage Group.  I asked the ladies to make me Dresdens.

This week I did a little mock up of the blocks I've received so far.   I'm excited about how it's coming together. 

A dresden is one of those patterns that involves lots of pieces, so having others help you make them (in the form of a bee) is awesome!  I'm not sure I'd ever tackle a whole quilt like this on my own.

 I really want to turn these into a bed quilt for my daughters' room.  Am I crazy?  I'm kind of panicking over all the white in the background.  Surely no 6 yr old could keep it clean, huh?  But it would look so pretty... What to do, what to do?!

Bee Block Catch-Up

I haven't posted my bee blocks in awhile.  I've been busy...

Here's what I've finished over the last couple months.

I felt guilty that her blocks, which were supposed to be done in July, weren't finished until Sept. so I made 2.  This one used teeny tiny piecing...

The little stars finish at 3 inches.  That means I started with 1.5 inch squares!! 
They are my smallest pieced blocks to date.  My husband liked them enough to say "Why don't you make a whole quilt out of those little stars.  That would be cool!"  Um...ya...that would take me approximately 10 years to complete!  :)  I still can't decide if ye was serious or not.

A "pastel" block for LaDean for Sept Quilt Club

I thought they would give it a little more interest as a stand alone block.

Look who tried paper piecing...and Survived!

This paper pieced flying geese block has been one of my favorites for a long time.  (There are a million beautiful versions of it but this one and this one are personal favs!)  I've just been too busy too chicken to actually try it.  That is one of the great things about joining a virtual quilting bee, though. You are forced to step out of your comfort zone more often than not.  

I was a wee bit scared when Sheetal announced it as her pick for our May Bee Vintage Block.  But I dove in...and I'm happy to report there were no tears, no bad words, and only minimal amounts of seam ripping involved.  Not bad for a first attempt.

I actually made this red + white version as a tester to the vintage sheet one.  I am going to use it in my quilt club anniversary quilt.  I think I've mentioned that I'm asking for red and white blocks for that project.  Won't that be so pretty?  I think so...

Bee Vintage Blocks for July {Sawtooth Star}

Thanks to the Vintage Sheet Patchwork Swap, I have joined my first virtual quilting bee. We call ourselves Bee Vintage and we are making blocks using our vintage sheet stashes.

July was the start of the swap. I got brave and decided to be first. For my block I chose the Sawtooth Star Block. (Instructions are here.) Because the blocks finish at a small 8 inches I had to make some extra blocks to get my quilt to the right size.


Here are the ones I made up.

I've said before how much I like scrap-looking quilts. This one will be no different. As you can see I'm kind of all over the place with fabrics, but when I laid them out together it didn't look nearly as chaotic as these picture appears.

Bee Vintage Group 2 is making string blocks for July. Go check theirs out, too. I'm pretty sure that someone in my group is going to chose that style when it's their month so I am already collecting my "strings" in anticipation.
