Family Puzzle

"Family Puzzle" by simple girl, simple life
Just wanted to pop in and say hello! We are hunkered down in our house enjoying the after Christmas lull and lots of fresh snow, while I sent the hubs out in the day-after-craziness in search of a "bargain" mini tree for next year.   He is a keeper for sure!!

I also wanted to share this fun little gift we received from Leslie this year. A "family puzzle" in the truest sense. We definitely had fun putting it together. :)

Hope all is well with you and your families!

I cannot figure out how I ended up with this size.

Color Crush Quilt

Inspired by
J Crew Spring 2011

image from istock photo

So, this is not what I was going for, but that's ok. (After making this one I know what I need to change to make what I was thinking in my head). I consider it a successful failure. And a really pretty one too.

M sleeps with this one at night
finished quilt measures 54" x 73"

I love the simple quilting.
I pretty much love everything about this quilt.

I used this tutorial as the guide for creating the corners of my squares.
No measuring on my part. Just freely sewing them on.
Then trimming the square to 4.5".

Mmmm, I love you my pretty......

The back and binding fabric are the same.
It's Pink polka dot by Riley Blake.

Most of the solids are Kona purchased at Joann's. I would have preferred to use all solids, but it just wasn't possible with the local selection. So I found what I could to make the gradient.

My favorite detail is the corner of khaki (bottom left). It's metallic and so pretty. Unfortunately, it wasn't really reading in photos. The fabric is Fairy Frost Glitz from the Princess Collection by Michael Miller. Also not as pretty online as it is in real life. Kind of smitten with that little detail though.

Black and White quilt

I've been wanting to do a black and white quilt, but nothing was really grabbing me (this was before discovering the houndstooth) so I came up with my own. Isn't it a minimalist beauty? OK, could be my opinion only. This one is also for the basement. And it's my biggest yet. Super simple. Traditional quilters are probably hyperventilating right about now, but I say we all can be friends. :)

Quilt Front

Quilt Back

finished quilt measures 61" x 81"
I bought 3 1/2 yards of this fabric and then cut it in half.
Pieced the two halves together.
And that's how I got my size.

these quilt lines are 4" apart
do you know the blue painter's tape trick?
um, it's the best (thanks, EM)

detail of how the quilting looks on the back.
this fabric is McKenzie by Dena
I purchased it locally, but looks like you can purchase online too

Note: I got lazy and didn't pre wash my binding fabric. Huge mistake. One I will never make again. It really warped the borders. And so......the handstitching has already snapped twice....when the girls use their great manners and yank the blanket out of my hands. So annoying. But there is no way I'm going to unpick. Lesson learned peeps.

Yeah, I dig it.

The girls have left their mark on this one a million times over. Still can't get rid of the pen L took to it. Aw, well that's because we use it every day.

Pink and Orange Party

I recently finished some crib quilts for my two girls.

M's quilt (more orange)
I've been liking her version more for some reason

a little technical info
Each quilt is made from twelve 4" strips with 1" white in between.
Finished quilt measures 41 x 56.5 inches

L's Quilt (more pink)

I won't deny that I motivate L to attach herself to this. You know, because I made it. I say things like, "Don't you want your pink quilt?", "Let's go get your pink quilt" or "Here's your pink quilt". She has a favorite blankie (it made an appearance here and here), but I'm hoping over time mine will become the fave.

I pretty much love how the quilting looks on the back. So clean. And subtle.

Detail view of the binding and back fabric on both quilts.

More quilting details

By far the easiest quilts I've made. I love this layout.

I'll leave you with Miss cutie patootie.

Blueprint Quilt {love/hate}

Inspired by this dress

from May/June 2007 Blueprint Magazine
****so sorry about the quality...the page got really beat up during quilt process.
This is the original article it appeared in, but does not include the photo of this dress.

The Quilt

Finished size measures 71.5 x 50.5 inches

I kept track of my costs this time around for those who are curious

SUPPLIES:
all solids purchased at my local Joann's using 40-50% off coupons
prints purchased at local quilt shop
1 yard Kona cotton solid in "Navy" $3.19
1 yard Country Classic cotton in "Kelly" $2.15
1 yard Quilter's Cotton in "Honeydew" $2.64
1 yard Country Classic cotton in "Artesian Blue" $2.15
3 yards Kona cotton solid in "White" $9.57
3 1/2 yards Lattice Urban Green by Fabri-Quilt (sale) $10.50
5/8 yard polka dot $6.00 (this one hurt after getting all the rest so cheaply, but it was so perfect)
1 2/3 yard Warm and natural Quilt batting $11.oo
TOTAL COST = $47.20

I didn't take as many photos of this quilt. Probably because I go from LOVING to HATING it about every other week. I'd do a lot of things different if I had a do-over. #1 though is a less literal translation.

But......It was just one of those things I had to get out of my system.

Confetti Quilt

The Quilt:

I decide against the black used in the inspiration and opted for charcoal
because I was feeling like it might look a little too NASCAR in quilt form.

detail of the binding

detail of the quilting

I made it specifically for our basement and love how it all works together.
love, love, love

My little L likes to snuggle.
I had to wrestle her for it the whole time I was trying to photograph.

All the solids were purchased at JoAnn's
Binding is Ooh La La by Kathy Hall for Andover Fabrics (purchased at my local quilt shop)
The back is Bloom in gray by Paula Prass (purchased at my local quilt shop)

Finished Dimensions:
54.5" x 76.25"
same as the zig zag

****leave a comment and you'll be entered to win my extra squares.
which will NOT make a quilt that looks like this. only the colors are the same.
(I started going with an entirely different layout in the beginning and then changed my mind).
There are 46 six inch squares.
