I finished up another graduation quilt this week.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Graduation for us around here isn't until the first week of June </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
so this is complete in plenty of time before all the festivities begin.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I like the variety on this quilt: football, choir, student council, </div>

volunteer opportunities, work, theater and church activities. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once again Lynn did a great job on the quilting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Love all the loopy loops.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She also did a different quilting loop on the border.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Mason will be heading to Brigham Young University in the Fall.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Had to get that represented on the backing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u>Details:</u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Finished size: 68 inches wide by 76 inches tall</li>
<li>5 yds. of BYU fabric for the backing. Mason's mama ordered it online since we don't live in Utah. Otherwise I think that an Utah JoAnn's would carry it.</li>
<li>3 inch wide cut border of Kona in Charcoal to frame it off. He didn't want any other sashing between shirts or columns.</li>
<li>This quilt incorporated about 45 t-shirts. He had a LOT! But many of them are small sections or logos. We did use one sweatshirt section. I try not to use a lot of sweatshirt because it can be tough on the quilter, but one or two intermingled doesn't seem to be an issue.</li>
</ul>

My friend Charity sent me this cute picture and a note on Facebook.<br />
<br />
"Your adorable suits make fabulous hand-me-downs. My niece is on the left (this year) and Ellie is on the right (3 years ago). Thanks again!!! <span class="_5mfr _47e3"><img alt="" class="img" height="16" role="presentation" src="https://www.facebook.com/images/emoji.php/v9/faa/1.5/16/1f603.png" width="16" />"</span><br />
<br />
So fun for me to see where these little suits end up.<br />

Original post about this suit can be found <a href="http://creativechicksatplay.blogspot.com/2013/05/time-out-for-some-swimsuits.html">here</a>.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6299918664756105326.post-89256236847293152972017-07-14T09:32:00.001-05:002017-07-14T09:33:04.820-05:00End Table Makeovers<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've been working on some side tables in my living room to get them looking more updated.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The rectangular one I bought at the thrift store for about $5 and the hexagon one I picked up off the curb from someone who was giving it away. They definitely weren't what I wanted, but free and/or cheap and functional is what I needed at the time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Both had glass tops. The Hexagon was missing the glass on the bottom too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAmv8O5klqPuy4oPl9cCZ2YqdVwuVLpuzYar8tAlekO66kSAov7U98oshMQrSxxs-_9Q7GuP-sJ_Cw9ZuGL-qD4BZBD1sXQ2LTeNelx1RZiWb_re4vOeHWFduP4Y8NqVBzVdFLzttEvQ/s1600/DSC07712.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAmv8O5klqPuy4oPl9cCZ2YqdVwuVLpuzYar8tAlekO66kSAov7U98oshMQrSxxs-_9Q7GuP-sJ_Cw9ZuGL-qD4BZBD1sXQ2LTeNelx1RZiWb_re4vOeHWFduP4Y8NqVBzVdFLzttEvQ/s640/DSC07712.JPG" width="425" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Nothing too fancy or noteworthy about either of these tables.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<u><br /></u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpjHoLoD8rE_PqtrZ86gnKIL0M93QAYa_lwzmHKVZdhAuAjC_z0UW36tVi26lCwTmsDHmb4tTndIis4mjMoApaRdb6lnrsn1I9FQkkLrw4vuL38s1D3yM5C97qTjn8sYqEtswmhIs-hw/s1600/DSC07713.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpjHoLoD8rE_PqtrZ86gnKIL0M93QAYa_lwzmHKVZdhAuAjC_z0UW36tVi26lCwTmsDHmb4tTndIis4mjMoApaRdb6lnrsn1I9FQkkLrw4vuL38s1D3yM5C97qTjn8sYqEtswmhIs-hw/s640/DSC07713.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First I pulled off both tables tops. Each of them were just screwed into the base from the bottom.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc0rwIsTy5c9VLFiebpfxRdSCM8ZUyjeL1xKQQA_kf7PFtT1o0RPh6Xglt90gogjn98Wlg2ItiBCHR4PJlGJnGC8pEW8yFc2DdNPc0UglmY3GknoU-MIgjVEAj7YVY6XA2vjMSzE6z5A/s1600/DSC07711.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><b></b><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc0rwIsTy5c9VLFiebpfxRdSCM8ZUyjeL1xKQQA_kf7PFtT1o0RPh6Xglt90gogjn98Wlg2ItiBCHR4PJlGJnGC8pEW8yFc2DdNPc0UglmY3GknoU-MIgjVEAj7YVY6XA2vjMSzE6z5A/s640/DSC07711.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<u></u>Then I used 1 x 4 and 1 x 6 scraps to form the top.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I like the different grain and knots in the pine.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<u><br /></u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On this you can see how I attached the individual pieces underneath with a little scrap piece.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdVBuoOT4LM6zwWiAK8IVns3D8EhFV7B5-0d-qY617AxzzH16sx-SjbVjH5WoUeFawSvh9ymATY1tgaAESO70_5bkjY_fDGd4LChEWlr2d22BVtcE2cPu-RibcZ3cIBEYd6brchcXNsg/s1600/DSC07887.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdVBuoOT4LM6zwWiAK8IVns3D8EhFV7B5-0d-qY617AxzzH16sx-SjbVjH5WoUeFawSvh9ymATY1tgaAESO70_5bkjY_fDGd4LChEWlr2d22BVtcE2cPu-RibcZ3cIBEYd6brchcXNsg/s640/DSC07887.JPG" width="640" /></a>The bases were painted separately.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
All I really did was clean them up a bit and sand some of the flat parts to remove a little of the finish before painting. I use a paint and primer mix and have good luck with that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After sanding the tops I stained them and sealed them with a clear matte finish.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><i><br /></i></b></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I will eventually cut, paint and attach that. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Since it attaches from the bottom I can do it later and it won't mess things up.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am also debating on doing a little distressing on the painted bases.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For now I am going to leave it and see what I think.</div>

I've been in the graduation party prep mode for the past week or so.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And what a great excuse to finally get some furniture for the deck.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This will only be our 3rd summer here in this house.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is about time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've been perusing Pinterest for ideas and found a couple that I liked.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This bench is 48 inches wide.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoHDRV8JdMcuN5zv8AzLnufP3ve8MeyKkJ52YsulUJo5xYH5h8XR-iWcZ-tw9z3dbe3d16rmIYvwULZyOYxuJD4td-77cH7BevTyErR9KERXe9QtJTOy_GuOmyOsAMNfuFkI200LWfNg/s1600/DSC07488.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoHDRV8JdMcuN5zv8AzLnufP3ve8MeyKkJ52YsulUJo5xYH5h8XR-iWcZ-tw9z3dbe3d16rmIYvwULZyOYxuJD4td-77cH7BevTyErR9KERXe9QtJTOy_GuOmyOsAMNfuFkI200LWfNg/s640/DSC07488.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is a side by side of the 2 different styles of bench that I made.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I actually made the straight bench first and then decided that I wanted one with a backrest.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2xBq_FZQqoHzEsnX3YJKkZXX3oVjptwoj6g0IRZyaJdrpK94B6J70QtrndWZaYmDealCVlWaBWgG_KBTi-bSUTqPRDv8wtj7zRm9MFKDjpIsiAdAku5rjNqq8i6pXyscn14gIoRHu8g/s1600/DSC07489.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2xBq_FZQqoHzEsnX3YJKkZXX3oVjptwoj6g0IRZyaJdrpK94B6J70QtrndWZaYmDealCVlWaBWgG_KBTi-bSUTqPRDv8wtj7zRm9MFKDjpIsiAdAku5rjNqq8i6pXyscn14gIoRHu8g/s640/DSC07489.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The straight bench is 54 inches long.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNDTpHA2GTMgUn1ZnGzobf8BhB-htXWAVypR_LOoEq8x3aRMM0GpjD466oPf6YB5DAOAYRGhUKFgUQ6umQ3BqiV_bggPEjlHP2TSjtukEoFNnUM6ruVFeypVCygpnzVpAJTX8Dje5YHQ/s1600/DSC07493.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNDTpHA2GTMgUn1ZnGzobf8BhB-htXWAVypR_LOoEq8x3aRMM0GpjD466oPf6YB5DAOAYRGhUKFgUQ6umQ3BqiV_bggPEjlHP2TSjtukEoFNnUM6ruVFeypVCygpnzVpAJTX8Dje5YHQ/s640/DSC07493.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And then I made 2 side tables, just for good measure.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Bring on the grad girl!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She is SO READY to be DONE!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We're ready to party!</div>

<li><u></u>I found that I needed to adjust the pocket holes for the backrest slats. If there is a next time I would cut the pieces to 32 not 31 inches and then make the marks. At 31 inches the piece didn't reach to the top of the top slat, which is what it showed in the pattern. If you are not spacing the back slats apart you won't need to adjust anything.</li>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hers looks a little more crazy than what I've done in the past.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
However, that is probably because she has attended 2 different high school during her time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
This is also the first time I've made a t-shirt quilt without any sashing or borders.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is definitely a bit more random than others I've done.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

As many of you know we like to make t-shirt memory quilts around here. What you may not know is that also leaves us with quite a bit of t-shirt scraps--some pieces are smaller than others, but sometimes we have entire blank backs that go unused.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So after <a href="http://creativechicksatplay.blogspot.com/2016/09/alexanders-finished-quilt.html">finishing my last t-shirt quilt</a> I decided to challenge myself and use up the "leftovers" of the t-shirts and turn them into a quilt of some sort. I've been holding onto these for quite some time.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What I came up with was a brick like pattern using 6 inch and 3 inch strips. Basically getting the stripes as wide as I could based on what I had. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjalIXGJuGdIyYQZUXWDlRx9KJs8_aEtksb3Nj6TwzBt-gi9NGLASy0gBanH6UE65pqzyT79A_3LYJPP7tl8OkxwDNxifILFp34yC098qEjWIMu-xIw1OiBYUj4h7xE8HTf9n_yV0cXWA/s1600/DSC07038.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH7vhWplvAnU4NkD7MXA5gAfaZOoRjrMS9fJfpNWXyhTPm4E7miQLslpCj2GgRIb0repcFr2oRhS2oGAzfsPPEpXvqTAsc7PjBx-xpE9ICDS9rneYPYjrrt6jdTFxLPMPS39_mz-Ijsg/s1600/DSC07041.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH7vhWplvAnU4NkD7MXA5gAfaZOoRjrMS9fJfpNWXyhTPm4E7miQLslpCj2GgRIb0repcFr2oRhS2oGAzfsPPEpXvqTAsc7PjBx-xpE9ICDS9rneYPYjrrt6jdTFxLPMPS39_mz-Ijsg/s640/DSC07041.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This baby is LARGE! And crazy, but I am pleased with the final result.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My 6'5" son and I are holding this up--widthwise--because it was too big to hold up lengthwise.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The backing was made from a chambray sheet and then added some additional stripes </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
so that it would be long enough.</div>
<div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Close-up of the quilting. I asked Lynn for some simple lines to hold it all in place and then some random pebbling on a couple of the smaller stripes. I love the pebbling! If I ever do one of these again I would have her do every other or every 3rd row with the pebbling.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
And here is my dad enjoying his new quilt.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
He likes them HUGE so he can tuck it under everywhere.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And he also likes the added weight of the t-shirt fabric.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Don't forget to interface all the t-shirt pieces so there is no stretching, especially for the quilter.</div>

<li><div style="text-align: left;">
Finished size 82 inches by 105 inches. Yes, it is HUMONGOUS!! Just the way this Arizona boy likes it so that he doesn't freeze to death. </div>

Next up for me in another random improve t-shirt quilt. It is done and needs a backing and to be quilted. And I'm almost finished with daughter #2's t-shirt graduation quilt. Hers will be interesting as it is a combo of 2 different high schools and other random shirts thrown in. Can't wait to show them off when they are finished.</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This weekend is our annual Sewfest Weekend in St. George.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For various reason I am not there this year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Mostly I'm O.K. with it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am planning on sewing as much as I can here at home while my sisters and cousin </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
are doing their thing. I'll post some of my finishes later.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Until then I'll show you what my sisters, Emily and Leslie (and a few of their buddies) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
did for me last Fall for my 50th birthday. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have to say I was super surprised. Not that my gift was a quilt, but that it was this quilt. I knew Emily was working on it but I didn't have a clue that it was coming to me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I LOVE it!! </div>

Which translated into a chunky knit hat that folded up at the brim and double pom poms attached. My daughter chose black for her hat. Why, you might ask? Because she is into neutrals and she knew that no one else would want that color. (And believe me when I say there was a LOT of drama involving the color choice picks--aren't 13 yr. old girls awesome?) She isn't a pink girl at all. <br />
<br />
So between me and another of the mom's we got them all done.<br />

Here is my daughter in hers.<br />

Here are some of the furbabies we've had at our home over the last couple of months.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSGWefxSQ7N-bqL-p4m-g55T5Yx1A40h_hgMvtuVExcNy1Onkmv4sIcvAjd4V9kbOVQL5TL-hT83e3ENGnuUlW7AgJ4HRR3EyGwQJOiGZUknlAPNiMIZuqkx6iethif210O7IE7G2Ehg/s1600/DSC04181.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSGWefxSQ7N-bqL-p4m-g55T5Yx1A40h_hgMvtuVExcNy1Onkmv4sIcvAjd4V9kbOVQL5TL-hT83e3ENGnuUlW7AgJ4HRR3EyGwQJOiGZUknlAPNiMIZuqkx6iethif210O7IE7G2Ehg/s400/DSC04181.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We only had Buddy for a long weekend until his regular foster family was ready to take him.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
He and Red didn't get along real great. Mostly it was just mutual toleration. But hey, the poor guy was surrendered by his owner because she couldn't take him with to her assisted living place and he got neutered all in the same time period. I wouldn't be too happy either.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3mu-WVPydkz_43N1_W64RnzkbaY7V5PBr_vOx3n9Bp0SiorjTa2YkpcfV96684g3wf7b9BklRvBK_q1tcfW-9aIbAa0ttnCUmfTtY7d5nANyQ8yID2_gToUilfYy8RduJY1Q_rUmubA/s1600/DSC04321.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3mu-WVPydkz_43N1_W64RnzkbaY7V5PBr_vOx3n9Bp0SiorjTa2YkpcfV96684g3wf7b9BklRvBK_q1tcfW-9aIbAa0ttnCUmfTtY7d5nANyQ8yID2_gToUilfYy8RduJY1Q_rUmubA/s400/DSC04321.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We watched Dinky here for a couple days while his foster family was out of town.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
He is cute, but was quite annoying. We also watched him while we had Red and he would not leave her alone....if you know what I mean. My kids got a little more sex education than I would have liked during that time period.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2F74UWS6PxcnIVKWNWC4RFHDOkbZGgPE1LcWIsNUAsXX4ZZw9pDsKsP4n4EM578KZtJ-exlixw3yrYhV1FmnvrRgXEpjbnzyxZmqPhKoNDog07-WbWDsq79wZ5SYyndXllaAbfhpVpg/s1600/DSC04185.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2F74UWS6PxcnIVKWNWC4RFHDOkbZGgPE1LcWIsNUAsXX4ZZw9pDsKsP4n4EM578KZtJ-exlixw3yrYhV1FmnvrRgXEpjbnzyxZmqPhKoNDog07-WbWDsq79wZ5SYyndXllaAbfhpVpg/s640/DSC04185.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Red was one of our favorites (or at least mine). I have to admit I had a hard time when she got adopted although she went to a lovely family. They send me updates every now and again. She loves their 4 kids (2 of which are adopted from China) and they love her. I think she has been a good "therapy" dog for the 2 kiddos from China who had only been in the US about 2 months before Red came along.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Aspen got adopted about 3 days after having to be surrendered by her owners </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
who lost their apartment and couldn't take her with where they were staying.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
New owners LOVE, LOVE, LOVE her. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Seriously, an understatement how happy they are to have her.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Watched our friends' Yorkie/Pomeranian, Figaro, over the Thanksgiving break.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have a changed opinion about little dogs after watching him. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
He was 6 lbs. of awesome!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The funniest was so see how each of my kids felt that he liked them best.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is our current foster furbaby, Ivy. She is only about 8 months old and is a lively thing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We've had her about a month now while she has been treated for mange. She is recovering nicely and is ready to be adopted. We hope some outdoor loving family will find her as she loves being active and outside even here in the freezing northland of MN. She just might be part sled dog.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you are local in the Twin Citites MN area go to <a href="http://carverscotths.org/">Carver Scott Humane Society</a> to see what animals are currently available for adoption. </div>

Decided to test out some of the settings on my camera tonight for a little comparison.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I took these all within just a few minutes time of each other.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I only changed the Picture Effect settings on my camera.</div>

<br />
Here is one of my latest projects: our current foster puppy, Ryder.<br />
<br />
He's a lively one for sure. <br />
<br />
Contact <a href="http://www.carverscotths.org/">Carver Scott Humane Society</a> if you're local and interested.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6299918664756105326.post-23925035665629369712016-09-16T07:30:00.000-05:002016-09-16T07:30:06.785-05:00So this is what have I been doing with my life lately.....<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So our favorite youngest daughter has been bugging us about a dog for awhile. We had a chocolate lab for a number of years that we had to put to down about 4 years ago. For about a year none of the kids were ready for another dog. And then we were getting ready to make a move and I wasn't going to do that with a new dog at the house. It has just been this Summer that I was willing to consider the possibility.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We decided to first start out by fostering some dogs to see what kind we would like next. Said favorite youngest daughter lasted 3 days before she was "done". Puppies are a pain and annoying she found out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEOKdsBO4yji_MJLCWUC_zaZbiSGmiSgXDvutx_nxZlXNnjPw8UmUrejga0K0lxrH4EPwRRBIEan2YDZj75YrmxaRVAdqcKWw5VFfP-nQaSMrpB4JwJcUzcrNhmtG3a5WV2PRA7vjV6g/s1600/DSC00783.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEOKdsBO4yji_MJLCWUC_zaZbiSGmiSgXDvutx_nxZlXNnjPw8UmUrejga0K0lxrH4EPwRRBIEan2YDZj75YrmxaRVAdqcKWw5VFfP-nQaSMrpB4JwJcUzcrNhmtG3a5WV2PRA7vjV6g/s640/DSC00783.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was our first foster, Hawkeye, at 8 weeks.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
He's one of 10 St. Bernard American Bulldog mix puppies.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
He was so soft and fluffy and chewed on everything he wasn't supposed to.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We had him about a week and he got adopted. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Everyone asks how we can foster and then give them to someone else.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Well, in Hawkeye's case I wasn't sure I wanted a dog that would end up being 100-150 lbs. when it was fully grown. I don't mind large dogs, but that is a little much. I already have "big" kids.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCAmxE2OE22xBm3VVbw2b0eB1cxPVUthVBhi44QgwFXhlAEZ_AJYK2-bbxtDXlUK4p2_S7CY4-3OnMwqeOsXNvAyCtcguMGzLOw5qqSQY_POTf1hBGFes88o5ceFzrAxmgC-l-tGEl1A/s1600/DSC00781.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCAmxE2OE22xBm3VVbw2b0eB1cxPVUthVBhi44QgwFXhlAEZ_AJYK2-bbxtDXlUK4p2_S7CY4-3OnMwqeOsXNvAyCtcguMGzLOw5qqSQY_POTf1hBGFes88o5ceFzrAxmgC-l-tGEl1A/s640/DSC00781.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But hey, we like them when they sleep, for sure.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZSmFJslARPq-rjlH62ttS-v01uRJlVs_PXQgkDw0n-FJ3wJqoa9p78_gkqV8jb9kZ26rklp14B3BjoVUQ0xDNGPqAhJ7hlLpJC9vosJXP8UaKe9jGnXCvCZcH1Etu09GdVILXrMhP-A/s1600/DSC00791.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZSmFJslARPq-rjlH62ttS-v01uRJlVs_PXQgkDw0n-FJ3wJqoa9p78_gkqV8jb9kZ26rklp14B3BjoVUQ0xDNGPqAhJ7hlLpJC9vosJXP8UaKe9jGnXCvCZcH1Etu09GdVILXrMhP-A/s640/DSC00791.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After Hawkeye we got these 3 North Dakota rescue puppies.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Piper, the little brown one and her two sisters Xena and Gabby (red collar).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Piper went to another foster family after 2 days with us and they ended up keeping her.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the foster world that is called a "foster failure", but a win for adoption. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The kids have all liked her the best from the beginning.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We had a couple close adoption calls, then they changed their mind or picked a different puppy.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I keep telling the foster team leader that we are getting "out cuted" by the younger fluffier puppies.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(And with about 18 more puppies available in the next month or two that might continue happening.)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
However, at this point we don't mind.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Xena is a lovely puppy and seems quite happy with us.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This weekend there is another adoption event...so fingers crossed.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If she doesn't get adopted soon we might have to seriously consider keeping her for ourselves.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b><u>Note:</u></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I am a foster volunteer thru the <a href="http://www.carverscotths.org/">Carver Scott Humane Society</a>. If you are local in those MN counties go check out what's available for adoption.</div>

<br />
This Spring he graduated from high school. I told him that if they wanted to pay for the materials I would put the time in and make him a t-shirt quilt for his graduation gift. <br />
<br />
Alexander was all over that. <br />
<br />
He is a funny kid. He has Asperger's and is very OCD about some things. It was difficult for him at first to go thru all his shirts and "give" them away, even though the majority of them didn't even fit him anymore. However, having them in a quilt will make both him and his mom happy (i.e. less shirts in his dresser drawers sitting there doing nothing).<br />
<br />
I had him go thru his t-shirt stash with me and he showed me the ones that for SURE had to go in the quilt and then depending on how the size and design ended up we had another pile of shirts to add to as needed. I didn't use up all the shirts he gave me, but we did use 24 of them. Not everyone will have that many shirts but Alexander NEVER wears a solid t-shirt....NEVER. It has to have some logo or something on it.<br />
<br />
This is the first time I have put together a t-shirt quilt that didn't involve the majority to be school or sports themed shirts. In fact, he only had one shirt that represents his school. Instead, Alexander likes video games, goofy sayings, Star Wars, Pokémon, etc. So I had to pull that all together in this quilt.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Here is the top all put together before sending it off for quilting.</div>
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSPNCX7yx6NrgbvBZSw2g_WWUKjwH7u0Kf437bLPqvf7Cj7_uIkaSYIzkGgSaa_R797gVqXxvRjWyOeb4dguJvVER5FkEct-pQKiNh3iWXicclTchpJK5y9jH_JmUJ39rsO33UTtIGpg/s1600/DSC00598.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSPNCX7yx6NrgbvBZSw2g_WWUKjwH7u0Kf437bLPqvf7Cj7_uIkaSYIzkGgSaa_R797gVqXxvRjWyOeb4dguJvVER5FkEct-pQKiNh3iWXicclTchpJK5y9jH_JmUJ39rsO33UTtIGpg/s640/DSC00598.JPG" width="426" /></a><br />
<br />
He picked out his sashing/border fabric as well as the backing fabric. He wanted to choose and not have me pick out something for him. Fine with me.<br />
<br />
I just heard back that the quilting is done and I should get it back next week. I asked Lynn to quilt his name and graduation year on a blank block that I included in the quilt since he didn't have any shirts with his name. I guess I need to go find some binding fabric to go with now that I know the quilt is coming back.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Last week I spray painted the porch swing.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It looks brand new and is so much fun.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I really wanted to paint the swing like this:<br />
<br />
<img alt="I so wanted to do this to our swing but the back slats are vertical not horizontal. Rats!: " class="pinImage rounded" data-load-state="pending" src="https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/d8/d1/ad/d8d1ad5d8f5b52ca12ee796fb02fa4fb.jpg" /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But alas my swing slats didn't go that direction.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix4apJD9qxv03YzHWEpVplDONICUgLTgZOAeVcln_tN_bejvKAsyPmDMCm0UnySxKDDDLlh-Pj6cYj1vUjd2FiInz3o_boI2tzsPgTRVtGuFfeFxPq0gJIzKEfL74cQLyoHDnInOswtg/s1600/DSC00525.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><br />

<span style="color: black;"></span><br />
I was slightly lazy about painting and probably should have taken the entire thing apart so that I didn't get any of the hardware painted. That seemed like too much effort. Besides, by keeping it hanging up I could just flip it over and spray the bottom without having to prop it up against anything else. And the day I painted it was so warm that it dried super quick.<br />
<br />
Instead of taking the swing apart I broke out the <a href="https://www.glad.com/food-storage/plastic-wrap/cling-wrap/?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=Glad%20Press%27n%20Seal&utm_campaign=GLB_Brand_Exact">Glad Press 'n Seal Wrap</a> and put it over the chain parts near where I was spraying and any of the bolts that I could get to. <br />
<br />
It felt pretty genius on my part.<br />
Once it all dried I just pulled it off and threw it in the trash.<br />
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Post graduation he gathered up the t-shirts he felt he could part with and sent them to me so I could put together this t-shirt quilt.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
He is a tall guy (goes without saying for our family)--about 6'3"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and so I had to make sure this quilt was long enough to cover his frame. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That was a trick as he didn't have as many shirts as his sister did.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
His older sister is the blondie middle one of <a href="http://creativechicksatplay.blogspot.com/2014/07/trio-of-grad-quilts-from-emily.html">this trio</a> of cousins. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I had to be a bit more creative in how I put his quilt all together. </div>
<br />

A little close-up of some of the t-shirt piecing I did for the borders.<br />
<br />
Now to pick out the back, binding and send it off to the quilter.<br />
<br />
<br />
<u><b>Details:</b></u><br />
<ul>
<li>Front and back (where possible) of about 7 t-shirts plus a sleeve logo. He had an EXACT duplicate of the white shirt front and back so I only cut the paw print off the second shirt and placed it in the quilt.</li>
<li>For this quilt I pieced much more of the solid color portion of the t-shirts to add to it, including the sashing. I might have even pulled some solids from other t-shirt quilt extras I had.</li>
<li><a href="http://creativechicksatplay.blogspot.com/2015/06/madissons-t-shirt-quilt.html">Post about his sister's t-shirt quilt</a>. You can see how different they ended up being even though they attended the same high school and both ran cross country.</li>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD9xSyy6ZGjqBzuD0hLbLBS8Hx3u7VQ1miXPuQzVQCXqMf4kNU3sZt2n5T5h41re4mvtvt80-m1KcP2Nt8UCiAsfso-TXUE-p24YXQ2RQzaYwqKvSPa7dsaSyRR2Y5u-3evDd7jch2iQ/s1600/DSC00315.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></div>
I like a good porch swing. <br />
It reminds me of my Grandma Johnson. <br />
They always had a swing at their homes. <br />
Though the swing that Grandpa made at their Idaho Falls home was <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/20547742030162012/">more like this glider</a>.<br />
<br />
When we moved last year we took the porch swing with us that had been hanging on our kids' swing set. The new owners didn't want the swing set and we gave it away on Craigslist in about 2 hours after listing it, but the porch swing came with us.<br />
<br />
On Saturday hubby and I made the A-frame for the porch swing.<br />
I'm not going to show the entire process, but just a few to give you an idea. We based it off of a couple plans we found. I listed the links at the end.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdKEZBrTY46Ndei3zxNfrrRB-KzsiLSrmuXlnz2vUFMyg6ddXQ6TSHSf3k9ceCjn30tY9StuT1gZieKEftF8bWPNnlSMKJADw0ZE-uL9xqPuhvsLtZbn6bs4HX0uSs5ZQv0oWtoGCAVA/s1600/DSC00316.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdKEZBrTY46Ndei3zxNfrrRB-KzsiLSrmuXlnz2vUFMyg6ddXQ6TSHSf3k9ceCjn30tY9StuT1gZieKEftF8bWPNnlSMKJADw0ZE-uL9xqPuhvsLtZbn6bs4HX0uSs5ZQv0oWtoGCAVA/s640/DSC00316.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Leg pieces</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIBgQIu4v9re6HdnpoP-43cEKU5RoTohahdyirApvMTnNNK5GhY701WxAUfmqXMcrJyY3MLihfTc0WG3KlrXEEt6v4K5HiIVIB4loOs_A31hyphenhyphenD1CUxauMtMSfrmvwxC4HIt_fd8G8k5A/s1600/DSC00318.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIBgQIu4v9re6HdnpoP-43cEKU5RoTohahdyirApvMTnNNK5GhY701WxAUfmqXMcrJyY3MLihfTc0WG3KlrXEEt6v4K5HiIVIB4loOs_A31hyphenhyphenD1CUxauMtMSfrmvwxC4HIt_fd8G8k5A/s640/DSC00318.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We used a <a href="https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=circular+saw&FORM=HDRSC2">circular saw</a> to cut the lap joints on the legs. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We could have just attached the 2 x 4 pieces with a butt joint but lap joints are stronger.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You just make a number of cuts between the markings down to the depth that you need.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Measure and adjust the blade as needed.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Then hubby just used a chisel to bust out the cut pieces.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Once the cut pieces are all out then you do a little clean-up with the chisel.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmaAHKdzHWPTe599UkrOh1hZtpVkx8XMR7tZDIBiOPNeJkvAN44dHfLwqYp-ub4D5ZGQbsdh4Il6Vaw7D1mqs8NKYSjRoTHxIg1uuUJRW3yltlwjKrpmCr1og52Hplivm-ceVGu-in3Q/s1600/DSC00326.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmaAHKdzHWPTe599UkrOh1hZtpVkx8XMR7tZDIBiOPNeJkvAN44dHfLwqYp-ub4D5ZGQbsdh4Il6Vaw7D1mqs8NKYSjRoTHxIg1uuUJRW3yltlwjKrpmCr1og52Hplivm-ceVGu-in3Q/s640/DSC00326.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After you have all the cuts done we dry fit the pieces and take additional measurements of the cross pieces. The larger piece on top is the beam placed there to determine the correct placement.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD9xSyy6ZGjqBzuD0hLbLBS8Hx3u7VQ1miXPuQzVQCXqMf4kNU3sZt2n5T5h41re4mvtvt80-m1KcP2Nt8UCiAsfso-TXUE-p24YXQ2RQzaYwqKvSPa7dsaSyRR2Y5u-3evDd7jch2iQ/s1600/DSC00315.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD9xSyy6ZGjqBzuD0hLbLBS8Hx3u7VQ1miXPuQzVQCXqMf4kNU3sZt2n5T5h41re4mvtvt80-m1KcP2Nt8UCiAsfso-TXUE-p24YXQ2RQzaYwqKvSPa7dsaSyRR2Y5u-3evDd7jch2iQ/s640/DSC00315.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then we just started assembling and screwing down pieces. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The only cutting down of pieces were on the 2 x 4's. We left all the 4 x 4's at 8 feet and the top 4 x 6 beam at 8 feet also. We debated on cutting some of it down, but decided we liked it as is. The bottom of the top beam ended up being 7 feet 4 inches from the ground once we were all done.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Porch swing is in place. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It would've been nice to actually hang it on our front porch too; </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
however, there would not have been much room to actually do any swinging.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can see the stump back left that we need to remove too. Here is the <a href="http://creativechicksatplay.blogspot.com/2015/10/timber.html">post on that tree</a>. And then we plan on putting a garden back in that spot too now that it isn't covered entirely by shade.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
A little close-up of how hubby attached and stabilized the beam and frame.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We angled the legs out 10 degrees to prevent some rocking from side to side.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The little stabilizer block piece is cut 45 degrees on the right, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
10 degrees on the left and is 6 inches long.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

After some time decided to place the swing here so we could enjoy the view of the pond and sunsets. We eventually plan on putting in a permanent fire pit there in front of the swing.</div>

Daughter #2 has been out in Idaho for a couple weeks working for her aunt and uncle with their fireworks business. She'll be home after the 4th of July sometime but this has been a good little trial run for her of living away from home. AND it was the first time ever that she flew in a plane. For a girl who has some anxiety issues, she did great. She texted and sent pics along the way, and at one point said she "was tempting fate by flying in 2 planes on the same day." Silly girl! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thanks to Ms. Devyn who helped her from Minneapolis to Salt Lake City. She sort of adopted our daughter at the airport check-in kiosk when she found out they were both flying to SLC. It was nice that she didn't have to worry so much. I love it when we find good people along our roads in life. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
She needed some storage items to keep everything corralled since she'll be gone for 5-6 weeks. So I made her this zipper pouch so that she can keep her AP summer homework all in the same place.</div>

Close-up of metal glued onto the board.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I cut the metal to shape with a pair of tin snips.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Used a jigsaw to cut the board.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS6V6xuPyYfN3XD-ydlmeJUdjEGWg72vx6gIOLhTSUNq73wET5iVzaWJBaoAcJWiwNJYGXPeaT5kfZgt_iep2gsEFmAXut14uL-CBUY5Hsnc0a2HQpZYC_gJzX_ulTOPUb0ap_s7PIhA/s1600/DSC00195.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS6V6xuPyYfN3XD-ydlmeJUdjEGWg72vx6gIOLhTSUNq73wET5iVzaWJBaoAcJWiwNJYGXPeaT5kfZgt_iep2gsEFmAXut14uL-CBUY5Hsnc0a2HQpZYC_gJzX_ulTOPUb0ap_s7PIhA/s640/DSC00195.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The crease on the board is what occurs when you use contact cement--don't quite get it </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
lined up correctly and quickly try and pull it off to reposition.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You just get a bend in your metal because it IS NOT coming off.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
At this point we are calling it "character". I didn't want to start all over.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It would have been too frustrating.</div>

<br />
<br />
<b><u>Hints:</u></b><br />
<ul>
<li>Originally tried to glue the metal to the board with Liquid Nails. Ughh, thumbs down!! As soon as I took the clamps off the pieces the metal just popped right off. Maybe I wasn't doing it correctly, but I felt it should've been easier to use.</li>
<li>Contact cement is PERMANENT! You cannot remove it and replace like other products. Once it is down, that is where it is going. In hindsight we should have put the metal into the frame and then laid the glued board down on top of it to get it lined up correctly. Since we didn't I had to go back and trim off metal or wood here and there in order to get the piece to line back up in the frame. And we also have a little crease in the metal after trying to pull it off quickly once we realized it wasn't lined up perfectly.</li>
<li>Once I got all the coats of paint on and then seasoned the chalkboard it wasn't nearly as noticeable. And I can always strategically place things I am hanging up.</li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Oh well!</div>
<br />
<b><u>Details:</u></b><br />

She said she needed a backpack to carry stuff around in so she wouldn't have to put it in her pocket of carry it by hand.<br />
This is what we came up with using no pattern and fabric that we already had in the stash.<br />
\<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can get an idea of how big it is based on my wingback chair.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I forget to measure it before my daughter left.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I opted to just tie the end off into a knot and add some fray check to the ends.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also sewed the straps down near the loop so that they would stay in place more.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also did this at the top of the strap, when the bag was completely open to stabilize again.</div>

We've been working on daughter #2's bedroom and here is one of the accessories we added to her room.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She wanted a chalkboard frame to write herself notes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And yes this is her handwriting--freehand.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She can print in font--it is amazing!</div>

This is the window side of her basement bedroom. We FINALLY got the orange-ish walls (check the first pic to see the previous color--sort of) painted a nice white which makes a huge difference. I still need to get rid of the dark brown wood blinds, but I haven't figured out what other window treatment to do. So for the moment we've added the tissue paper flowers to try and "disguise" the window a little. It was cheap and easy until we know what we are going to do permanently.</div>
