Getting My Improv On

I will admit that I am not much of an improv/wonky thinker.  Especially in my sewing life.
It sort of scares me a bit. Or should I  say... a LOT!

We all grew up sewing clothing, so precision and accuracy are critical skills if you don't want your clothes to "look" homemade.   Those skills work well for quilting, too, but maybe not as much for improv/wonky type things.  You need to be a bit more "free-thinking."  I'm trying, but I'll admit it's hard to unlearn some of that.

So I am challenging myself to some improv this week.

These are my slabs made using the technique from the Sunday Morning Quilts book.  I was going to turn them into scrap boxes as suggested, but I'm sort of hung up on another idea I have brewing... So maybe boxes, and maybe not.  We will see.  But I'm happy with how they turned out.  Quite addicting!

How do you feel about improv?

  1. I find it difficult and sometimes ugly. In this case with your matching blues it looks okay. Are you actually using scraps (my gut tells me you are)? I have a really hard time with cutting up brand new perfectly good fabric and turning it into improv/wonky. If I am using scraps then it's more appealing as I'd feel good about using otherwise unused small pieces. But I am curious as to what you are going to do with these blocks. :-)

    1. Yep, all scraps. I have a hard time cutting into yardage as well. :)

  2. I've been doing some improv work too---thanks to Amanda Jean's book. I wasn't sure how my firstborn/slightly A-type personality would feel about it, but I think I might be addicted (that could be the OCD coming out) Anyway, I've been enjoying it.

It does make me feel that it is hard to make something "ugly" or "wrong" which for a lot of people is so helpful.

Your blocks look great. I can send you more blues if you need some. Not sure what your ultimate goal or plan is, but I have plenty to spare.

    1. I don't need a ton, since a little goes a long way, but I'll take a small pkg if you want to send them. <3
